Marty Abrams, Comic Con + the future of Mego « Thread Started on Feb 8, 2009, 9:58am »
Our day began with a train ride in to Manhattan to attend the massive New York Comic Con, a sold our event with a capacity of 75,000 people. Megocentral member Steve (sdirienzo) accompanied me on the way to the Javitts Center where we met a host of eager Mego collectors, all waiting to hear what Doc Mego and Marty Abrams had up their sleeve thanks to a panel discussion held by ToyFare. I've got great news for you guys too! We shot video and have the entire question and answer panel on video. That's right people, it'll be posted here shortly just as soon as I have it converted from VHS to a digital format. That's not to say that we don't have images from the con for you now. So, without further delay, our day at the New York Comic Con begins.
Our first stop was to Mark Huckabones booth where Mego goodness is never hard to find. As usual, Mark has been busy traveling but made time to set up at the con. As you can see in this pic, Mark is in the middle of a deal while Steve is doing his totally focused on cases of boxed, carded and loose mego figures.
If you can't find it at Mark's booth then you probably aren't looking in the right place. You can easily spend an hour at his booth looking at his displays and we found ourselves returning a few times throughout the day. Our next stop was at the man of the hours booth, the one and only Doc Mego. Here's a guy who recognized the need for replacement parts for our beloved mego figures and has been at it for almost 2 decades. I'm a firm believer that Paul is a big reason why Mego figures are enjoying such intense popularity these days and from what I witnessed yesterday, we've got some terrific times ahead.
As I was standing talking to Paul, a small boy and his dad purchased a loose Aquaman from him. The look on the boys face was one of amazement. You would think that he had a brick of gold in his hand, Paul turned to me and said " that's why we do this ". It pretty much summed up the day and I've gotta say, it was a moving experience. I couldn't help but thinking how lucky I was to be a kid who grew up playing with Mego. I think looking at a few of Doc Megos displays will cause more than a few of you guys to hit eBay with a renewed sense of commitment.
I couldn't help picking up all the figures behind Doc Mego's booth. Regardless of my age, I still feel like a kid whenever I'm at one of these shows. How could you not?
As we waited for Marty and the Doc to do their thing, Mike J, Steve and I tried to sit in on the Robot Chicken panel. Needless to say, half of the 75,000 attendees must have been thinking the same thing. After close to a 30 minute wait we were turned away. I think the look on Mikes face says it all.
The question and answer panel went smoothly except for one little thing. The Power Point presentation couldn't be used due to the fact that the guys running it forgot the password to the laptop. You can see them feverishly working on the problem on the far left.
Many of the questions were aimed at Marty, from what his favorite figure was to what his plans were for the future of Mego. All were answered with Martys classic sense of humor despite the blank sceen in back of him. He did mention that we would be seeing Mego toys on store shelves in the future! Apparently Marty has been working behind the scenes to get Lego to release the choke hold they have on the actual Mego name along with a library he obtained that will give Marty the freedom to pursue the relaunch. Whether he moves on the 8 inch format is anyone's guess but we are moving in the right direction. Asked if Emcee would be doing superheroes? One of the panelists stated that the licenses were tied up by the " big boys " and the only way we'd see them was if we demanded them. It may be time for an email campaign. Other tidbits mentioned:
1) Mego had no intention to produce Logans Run figures other than to snatch up the property to ensure that no other company released a Farrah figure.
2) Marty claims to remember that Dr Doom was released in Europe but having spent hours talking to the man I can say with confidence that his memory isn't what it used to be. No Dr Doom was released.
Of course a pic with the man himself was the highlight of my day along with a bag of Emcee stuff that I lugged home. For those that haven't picked up the Night of the Living Dead figures yet, well, what the heck are you waiting for. They nailed the likeness perfectly. Walking in to the various booths and seeing reproduction Mego figures hanging on the pegs is a sight I never thought I'd ever see again. I can't begin to describe how proud I am of Doc Mego. He ended by saying that he wouldn't rest until he re released superheroes and ya know what? I believe him! Like I said, the entire panel was videoed and should be here for everyone to see real soon. A great day was had by all, all thanks to Emcee Toys and one Mr. Marty Abrams.

Looks like a place I would've loved to be at. I would've loved to meet Marty and show him my Emergency! figure set to get his opinion on how it would've gone over back in the day

So far the good Doctor didn't want to confirm any new releases other than expanding and finishing what their already in to. I see good things coming from them. Like I said countless times, we're lucky to be in the know with Mego collecting. I honestly feel special collecting these toys. Call me crazy but I absolutely love it and the people that are involved with it. As a side note, Martys PR man gave me some info on Martys latest. He actually bought the Pet Rock license and will be releasing them in TRU this coming March. He's going to start with 12 rocks which all have faces on them and have names like Granite, Chippy, Fracture and other cute names. You should have seen him swarm when I complimented his wife on how pretty she looks. I spent time with her at Megocon2004 and I mentioned that she looks even better today. The minute Marty saw me talking with his wife he was on me like white on rice.

It looks like you had a great time Rob. I can wait to watch your video tape. If I get everything right, toys with the name Mego on their box should be seen in stores in a short future? Is that correct?

According to Marty, what will happen is that the name Mego will most likely replace Emce in the future. Lego owned the name Mego for many years and wouldn't sell it due to it sounding so close to their brand. Marty finally obtained it along with a library of intellectual product. So in short, we will be seeing the name Mego again on store shelves. Whether they'll be action figures like the ones we remember is anyones guess.

What you are saying Rob is quit exciting, I never expected that. I'm woundering which toys it will be. I hope it will be action figures, looking like the one of the past (8 inch tall, with costumes) but with something different and up to date so we can clearly distinguish the new from the old one. I guess we will keep an eye on this and talk about it in futur post.

Absolutely Fred, it is exciting. All of our childhoods were shaped around toys and for me, megos were at the center of it all. Lots of great memories so yea, seeing that familiar "M" on store shelves will be special indeed. Like Marty said, if he knew Megos would be so popular this many years later he would have worked harder.
